These pictures were taken on the weekend of July 11-12,1970 about 3 months after George Gorman bought his first Porsche, a basic 1970 914/4. As he recalled, the 6-hour was run on Saturday and the Can-Am on Sunday (may have been the other way around).

First photo is of the 914-6 driven by Ralph Meaney and Stephen Behr in the 6-hour. Wiki says it was last of the cars still running at the end of the race, but it was still running…..about 100 laps behind the winning John Wyer 917K driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Leo Kinnunen. Notice that this is NOT a GT – no fender flares.

The second photo is of the #6 917K that Brian Redman raced in the Can-Am and took 7th. The #1 917K (rear fairing against the wall) raced both in the Can-Am and the 6-hour. Jo Siffert took 2nd in the Can-Am after he and Brian Redman placed 2nd in the 6-hour. Apparently no one needed clean rooms back then.

The final photo is of the 911T of Bob Tullius and Bruce Jennings, again after the 6-hour. Wiki tells us they placed 13th about 75 laps behind the winning 917K.

Nelson Ledges

So, anyone ever heard of Nelsons Ledges Race Track? As some of you may know, I grew up in Erie PA. The Ledges were down around Youngstown, Ohio. It was owned by Marvin Drucker out of Cleveland. I have a visitor this weekend and we were reminiscing about our earlier days. He drove down at The Ledges back in the day. He had a Renault Gordini. On that particular day, he shared the track with a bright yellow Lister Corvette driven by Ed Lowther. Every time he was passed by this beast, he had to hold on to his car to keep it on the track.

The Lister was quite the car in its day.

Hogan’s Corner

On 4 November 2021 at Swannanoa Jerry Hampton was taking photographs which he shared for Blau Rain. Look for his photographs in the January 2022 edition. Jerry was a frequent photograph contributor of Blue Ridge Region, PCA, and other events.
