Cars & Coffee – Lynchburg
Apparently, there were more than a few members up at the Lynchburg C&C this past week because I saw this picture up on Facebook.
Cars & Ice Cream – Smith Mountain Lake
This past Sunday at 4PM, there was a Cars & Ice Cream at SML. After a morning golf game, I dragged myself over there to see what was happening. Well, the 96 degree weather put a damper on the afternoon activities and only seven cars showed up. An early original owner Corvette and a later model Corvette, a Chevy truck, a clean Oldsmobile 98 convertible, a Fiat X1/9, my Carrera and a 1950 Hudson Hornet.
Now you might think the day was a bust, but what was interesting was the history of this Hornet.
The owner had gotten in interest in Hornets a few years ago and started shopping around to find one. As you might imagine, there were not very many and those that were available were cheap, ie under $3K. He found one for $3K and offered $1500 and settled for $1600. When he got it home, he found out why. Hudson’s were unibody, ie, no frame and this one was badly rusted. That began his adventure to build a frame, mount the drive gear onto it and a beautiful Chrysler 460CI with twin four-barrel carbs, headers, cutoffs and more. He added disk brakes on the front, a new steering wheel system, traction bars and a front hood along the lines of an E-type. New bucket seats, electric windows and more. Quite a machine. And he and his friends built it themselves. Quite a feat. You do not see something like this at our Cars & Coffee.
As for the other cars, you have to look carefully at the hood of the Hornet and you can see them in the reflection. Not as nice a shot as our friend, Dave Hogan might do, but I am catching on!
