Sebring 1957

If you young whippersnappers ever wondered what it was like to watch the Sebring races back in the 50’s then look no further than this photo. This part of the Sebring track was what was called Big Bend back in 1957 with trees, shrubs, mailboxes, telephone poles and spectators just feet from the poorly maintained racing surface. It was thrilling for spectators to watch as well as dangerous for drivers and spectators alike. The #8 Jaguar D-type of Jack Ensley leads the Maserati 450S of World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio as they approach the Hairpin Turn. Behind Fangio is the C1 Corvette of Dick Thompson and another car. Fangio and co-driver Jean Behra would win and it would be the second Sebring win for Fangio in a row as well as his last time at Sebring as a competitive driver. SIR Photo.
